Hi, I’m Richard Cobbett, founder of Credit Check.
Just over 8 years ago, I was in your shoes. After living in Adelaide for some years, my family and I moved to Queensland. Life seemed wonderful—the new house was great, the neighbourhood amazing. Everything was going perfectly… or so I thought.
The nightmare begins
I needed a car, so I went to apply for a loan. That was the beginning of 3 stressful, maddening years. Unbeknownst to me, when we moved to Queensland, my electricity provider kept sending bills to my old Adelaide address instead of updating to the new Queensland address.
Despite my clear record of paying bills on time in the new address, they reported me as delinquent.
Round in circles
For over 2 and a half years, I explained, yelled, screamed, sent threatening emails to seemingly uninterested parties —doing everything I could to get this default removed. I went round and round in circles, looking for clear answers and getting absolutely nowhere. The time involved and the simple injustice was infuriating!
Then, finally, after studying everything I could about Australian Consumer protection laws and credit credit consumer protection laws and regulations, I managed to piece together the process I needed to eventually get that unfair default struck from my record.
From pain to purpose
This painful experience made me realise how many other Australians must be going through similar credit report nightmares due to incorrect listings, errors, or misunderstandings of credit laws. With this my inclination to solve problems I come across, I decided that I wanted to help others in the same situation
— and so Credit Check was created.
